Travel Map: Vail
Skiing is one of my favorite winter time sports. I can satisfy my urge locally with a few decent local resorts. Among my favorites: Wisp, Snowshoe and Timberline.
But when I’m sick of the 5 minute runs, the ice and 30 minute lift lines I call up my buddy Warren and head out to Beaver Creek in Avon, Colorado. Part of the Vail resorts heralds the tagline “Not Exactly Roughing It” – and it’s well deserved. 17 lifts, most high speed quads, 1815 acres of national parkland to ski, average snowfall 310″ a year and catwalk access to two other resort ski areas in the Vail system what’s not to love.
For a techno geek it’s pretty sweet. Your ski pass has an embedded RFID tag which you can link up to their EpicMix social network system. Think of it as an automatic Foursquare for skiing. It automatically checks you in to each lift, tracks your progress and achievements, allows you to earn badges and see where your friends are on the mountain. With apps for iPhone and Android devices.
When we’re not on the slopes there’s a lot of great places to check-out and eat apres-ski. Remember slopes close at 4 so as not to wreck the terrain. Novel idea east coast!
As part of our on-going series I have created a Google Map with all of the hot spots that we like to go to. You can easily access this map on your iPhone, iPod or iPad with byfollowing the instructions in this post and entering the short code: http://bit.ly/VailSki
